Lyrics

The Cavan Girl

As I walk the road from Killashandra, weary I sat down

for its twelve long miles around the lake to get to Cavan Town.

To travel on the road I go once seems beyond compare

now I curse the time it takes to reach my Cavan girl so fair.

The autumn shades are on the leaves the trees will soon be bare

each red gold leaf around me sees the colour of her hair.

My gaze retreats to find my feet and once again I sigh

for the broken pool of sky surrounds the colour of her eye.

At the Cavan cross each Sunday morning its there she can be found

for she seems to have the eye of every boy in Cavan town.

If my luck will hold I'll have the golden summer of her smile

and to break the hearts of Cavan men she'll talk with me a while.

So next Sunday evening finds me homeward Killashandra bound

to work a week till I return to court in Cavan town.

When asked if she would be my bride at least she'd not said no

so next Sunday morn I'll rise again and back to her I'll go.

As I walk the road from Kllashandra weary I sat down

for it's twelve long miles around the lake to get to Cavan town.

To travel on the road I go once seemed beyond compare

now I curse the time it takes to reach my Cavan girl so fair.

This New "Irish Traditional Music Release Volume 1" by Alistair Sherwood features tunes from Ireland's distinguished Trad Catolag. Both Songs Nancy Spain and The Cavan Girl are sung by Alistair to an arpeggiated chordal harmonic backdrop performed on guitar. Irish tunes are played on Guitar and Ukulele with varied accompainment.

Some would be described as Celtic/ Spiritual in music, while others are in the treasury of Transatlantic Sessions. Alistair says "I wanted to explore the deep soul of these melodies and channel their charms into the margins of gradualism, unlike a time I may have flogged them to the finish line, fulled with the froth of ten pints. I guess I played them with the might of Minimalism. As a purist you may disagree with the tempo but that's the way the felt to me :-)"
